On Tuesday, the Supreme Court it would list for hearing on November 14 a PIL seeking constitution of a judicial commission to probe the Morbi bridge collapse incident in Gujarat. Over 140 people had died on Sunday when the ill-fated Morbi bridge collapsed due to over crowding.

In a PIL, Lawyer Vishal Tiwari, said the accident leading to the collapse of the bridge resulting casualties, depicted the negligence and utter failure of government authorities. From the past decade, various incidents have taken place in our country wherein due to the mismanagement, lapse in duty, negligent maintenance activities, there have been cases of huge public casualties which could have been avoided.
CCTV footage of the incident has revealed that people standing on the narrow bridge fell into the river after one of the two main suspension cables suddenly snapped.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on a state visit to Gujarat visited Morbi. PM Modi chaired a high level meeting and took stock of the situation. He said, its the need of the hour to conduct a detailed probe and get to the real reason of the bridge collapse.

Police have registered an FIR (first information report) on charges of culpable homicide against agencies given the task of maintenance and operation of the bridge. The case was registered in Morbi under Indian Penal Code Sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide).
The FIR stated the bridge was not in use for nearly eight months as the local administration had roped in a “private agency” for its maintenance.
