Slangs, physical attacks shame MCD standing committee election; Councilors undeterred

Vested interests among both the parties – Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councilors on Friday maligned the dignity of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Never before Delhi had witnessed such violent situations over elections. Earlier, we saw how the Mayor polls was stalled three times and the scenes house had witnessed when finally Shelly Oberoi’s name was announced on Wednesday as Delhi’s Mayor.

The polls have been postponed till February 27, 2023.

What actually happed and why?

Election to elect the members of the standing committee was taking place. 250 elected councilors cast their votes on Friday as a fresh poll was taking place to elect the six-members of the is being conducted to elect six standing committee. It closed with 242 of the 250 councilors casting their votes. The Mayor informed, eight members had abstained from voting and did not cast their votes. Standing committee is the highest decision-making body in the MCD.

A scuffle broke out between BJP and AAP councilors after Delhi’s newly elected Mayor Shelly Oberoi said that there will not be a recounting of votes to elect the six-member Standing Committee, after a vote was declared as invalid. The equation is simple – If voting takes place and this one vote comes to AAP then the party will have four members.

The names of councillors who did not vote – Mandeep Singh, Ariba Khan, Nazia Danish, Sameer Ahmad, Shagufta Chaudhary Zubair, Sabila Begum, Naziya Khatoon and Zarif.

MCD stands ashamed today…

The house witnessed abusive languages, punches, kicks, and even attacking with plates and blades. Some of the members of BJP were seen bleeding profusely. According to BJP councillors, women councillors of AAP attacked them and abused them.

Aam Aadmi Party has once again exposed it’s hunger for power. The visuals show clearly that not the Saffron but it was AAP (that always pretend and preach to be naive), had resorted to violence. Not just male councillors but even the women councillors were seen attacking, abusing and creating ruckus inside the house.

Exit Polls show BJP winning Gujarat & Himachal Pradesh; MCD to AAP

Second and final phase of Gujarat Polls were held on December 5 (today). Some of the prominent people who cast their mandate includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, State chief minister Bhupendra Patel among others. The festival of polls came to an end for this year.

Exit Polls were held immediately after the polling concluded. Results for Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were discussed. Though, any Exit Polls cannot be full proof or the last say but still it helps to understand the trend of winning or losing in any polls. Also, there are possibilities that entire or part Exit Polls can go wrong totally but the chances are rare. The samples collected for the survey are done after immense research and analysis.

The poll season or fever comes to an end with the closing of second phase of Gujarat polls.

Different brands or poll analysts have different readings but the message is more or loss clear. Suppose Channel A is predicting Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in lead then Channel B, C or D too have same reading, numbers may differ.

After returning to Delhi, PM Modi attended a party event at the BJP headquarters and discussed the 2024 general elections. This shows how serious this party is about winning elections. On the contrary, there is Rashid Alvi of Congress who on a television debate argued by saying “hum harenge kyunki hum jitna nahin chahte hain…” (We may lose because we were not interested in winning polls).

On average, in Gujarat, and Himachal Pradesh the trend is towards the BJP. Congress making a dent and AAP being totally wiped off in Himachal Pradesh (seats between 0 to 1). Congress is trying to revive atleast in Gujarat where Exit Polls show it behind BJP with around 30 to 40 per cent) votes. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on average is fighting the battle with 1 to 15 seats.

Though it’s too early to predict as the picture may change on the actual counting day.

However, in MCD, the trends show that AAP has done good homework and is sweeping Civic Polls in Delhi with around 140 to 170 seats. This is indeed a very big development for a party that has lost its face value over liquor politics. Though, it’s not the ‘win win situation’ for the AAP but is getting the advantage of anti-Congress votebank.

The results for MCD will be declared on December 7, 2022. Results for Gujarat, and Himachal Pradesh will be declared on December 8, 2022.

MCD Polls 2022: DPCC chief Anil Chaudhary returns without casting vote, his name missing in the list

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections are underway in the city. The tough fight is between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Congress. Voting is taking place across 250 wards. Over 1,300 candidates are in the fray. The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) Anil Chaudhary, who went to cast his vote at a polling booth in Dallupura, East Delhi, had to return without casting his mandate as his name was missing in the voter’s list.

The DPCC chief said, “My name does not appear on either the voter or the deleted list. My wife cast her vote. Officials are investigating it”.

He tweeted, “Make certain you are not voting for those who have polluted the air, water, city, society, or politics! Vote to turn filthy Delhi into Shining Delhi.”

Earlier, Anil Chaudhary who has been visiting various polling booths in the city urged the people in the city to vote to ‘make a corruption-free, drug-free, pollution-free, garbage-free, debt-free, and mafia-free corporation’ before the voting.

The ruling BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party have each fielded 250 candidates. The Congress has 247 candidates, while the Bahujan Samaj Party has 132. There are also 384 independents competing. There are a total of 1,349 contestants in the running.

The DPCC chief had been vocal on the wrongs of the AAP government in the state and were among the predominant politicians who had raised the liquor politics and how they had transformed the city into a liquor capital. In November last year, Chaudhary had exposed the AAP and alleged that it had even flouted the masterplan of the city to accommodate liquor mafias to open their shops and ‘thekas’ within the 100 meter radius of religious and educational institutions.

In Delhi, 68 model polling stations and 68 pink polling stations encompassing all eleven assembly segments have been put up. The counting will take place on December 7.

MCD Polls 2022: Delhi-ites voting to elect councilors, low vote percentage till afternoon

Around 1.5 crore electorates will cast their mandate across 250 wards, for the Municipal Corp[oration of Delhi (MCD) elections taking place on Sunday today. The voting percentage till 12 noon which is 18 per cent shows very poor voting in the city. Though, there is still enough time for people to come out of their houses and cast their votes. Many are expected to turn out in the afternoon being a Sunday. Voting began at 8 am and polling station gates will be shut at 5.30 pm.

There are 1,349 candidates in the fray and over 1.45 crore electors are eligible to exercise their franchise in the elections to the 250 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the results of which may have ramifications beyond the national capital.

The main fight is between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress. On the side lines of the MCD polls, all the parties were seen engaging in the allegation and counter allegation syndrome. However, AAP seems to be over confidant in saying that it will win the MCD and oust the BJP as people in the city are with them and are not happy with the Saffron.

MCD Polls 2022: BJP releases its manifesto, highlights ‘Jahan Jhuggi wahan makaan’ scheme

Finally, the elections for Delhi Municipal Corporations (MCD) have been announced. The dates were announced by State Election Commissioner Vijay Dev announced the dates on Friday. MCD elections will take place on December 4, 2022 and the counting of votes will commence on December 7, 2022. With the announcement of the dates, political parties – Bharatiya Jananta Party (BJP), Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have fastened their seat-belts to find ways to impress and woo the voters. The real fight is between BJP and AAP. BJP which is already in power in the civic body in the state says people will not vote for AAP as they are in no mood to take the false convictions by AAP. BJP has slammed the AAP over playing a dirty political game over liquor politics. One of major attraction of the BJP’s manifesto in the MCD polls is the ‘Jahan Jhuggi wahan Makaan Scheme’, permanent houses for the slum dwellers.

On Friday, today, BJP Delhi chief Adesh Gupta and the party MP Manoj Tiwari released the party’s manifesto for the upcoming Delhi civic polls. The BJP national president JP Nadda Earlier on Wednesday chaired a Delhi BJP core group meeting at his residence in the national capital over the elections.

Permanent ‘pucca’ houses to slum dwellers: BJP released its ‘Vachan Patra’ or commitment letter promising houses for slum dwellers under the ‘Jahan Jhuggi wahan Makaan Scheme’. It may be recalled, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 3,024 newly constructed Economically Weaker Section (EWS) flats last month under the national capital as part of an In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation (ISSR) project and handed over their keys to slum dwellers at Bhoomiheen camp.

These flats were built by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) under its in-situ slum rehabilitation project.

Let’s take a glance at some of the other salient features of the m,anifesto or ‘Vachan Patra’:

  1. Proper disposal of garbage in the capital. Garbage disposal has been one of the key issues in the national capital ahead of the civic body polls.
  2. Checking corruption in government departments.
  3. Improvement of civic amenities.

The ‘Wachan Patra’ has a form which they will fill and the BJP workers will submit them to the departments concerned and the slum dwellers will get houses.

The rival AAP will also launch its manifesto soon.

There will be 13,665 polling stations across the 250 wards, while the total number of voters in the city stands at 1.46 crore, according to the electoral rolls with the qualifying date of January 1, 2022. The results will be declared on December 8, 2022.

MCD Polls: Allegations-counter allegations regular feature between BJP and AAP, says polls to be fought on garbage issue

Ornamental makeovers, putting icing on the sugar across the city by civic bodies is nothing new when elections are knocking at door. The same city that faces step children attitude due to apathy of municipal bodies in the states suddenly become spic and span as the civic polls are announced. This is exactly the situation in Delhi which is about to go to municipal elections. The dates are not yet announced but as per the speculations, the dates will be announced within a few days. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have fastened their seat-belts and engaging in daily brick-bating. The city politics has turned murkier with both BJP and AAP indulging into allegations and counter allegations.

The problem is city dwellers who have no say in these political cat-fights are the worst sufferers as who ever come to civic bodies totally turn a deaf ear and blind eye to the plight of the people. Water filling in the city or garbage is a perennial problem.

On Thursday today, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal along with deputy Chief Minister manish Sisodia visited the Ghazipur landfill site and said the upcoming MCD polls will be fought on garbage issue. He assured the Delhi-ites that if AAP comes to power then Delhi will be clean city in five years. Immediately, BJP MP and former cricketer Gautam Gambhir said, he did not see AAP doing a bit to clean the city in past seven years.

Last week Union Home Minister Amit Shah while inaugurating the Tehkhand waste to energy plant at Tughlakabad said,  Kejeriwal government showed a “step-motherly treatment” to erstwhile three Delhi civic bodies, and claimed that the AAP government owed them ₹40,000 crore. Shah took a pick at the AAP and said, “We want to make Delhi ‘atmanirbhar’ and Kejriwal wants Delhi to be ‘AAP nirbhar”.

The Union home ministry recently accepted the and notified the final delimitation commission report that was constituted by the Centre following the merger of the three civic bodies into a unified MCD through two notifications issued on October 17, paving the way for holding municipal elections in Delhi. The polls were abruptly cancelled in March when the Centre announced that the three civic bodies in the city will be merged. A unified MCD came into being in May.
